Biography

Eric Usher is currently responsible for the Seed Capital Assistance Facility, a joint undertaking with the Asian and African Development Banks working to engage the private investment community in financing early stage low carbon energy ventures. He also operationally has involvement in a number of other finance mobilization efforts and analytically works related to the evolving climate finance architecture. He has also been jointly coordinating UNEP's Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative, a range of programme activities related to finance sector engagement in the sustainable energy and low carbon sectors including the annual Global Trends in Sustainable Energy Investment report and other studies on the role of public and private financing in climate mitigation.

Until 2008 Mr. Usher led UNEP's renewable energy finance unit and in this role was broadly responsible for engaging the finance sector in the shift towards low carbon energy infrastructure (www.unep.fr/energy/finance). This work focuses on new means for financing climate infrastructure and new approaches to delivering cleaner energy services in regions without access.

Before joining UNEP, Mr. Usher held the position of General Manager of Noor S.A., a solar rural electrification company in Morocco and, prior to that, Programme Manager of energy technology commercialisation projects at the Energy Diversification Research Laboratory in Varennes, Quebec.
