UNEP Energy Activities
UNEP
Energy activities help partners incorporate environmental factors
into their energy-related decisions. We provide information, develop
tools for decision makers, improve analytical and policy skills,
and conduct pilot and demonstration projects. Most activities are
focused on developing countries and countries with economies in
transition.
Current Activities:
Renewable Energy
These activities include technology research, development, transfer
and the commercialisation process. Some examples: Rural Energy
Enterprise Development (REED) and the Sustainable Energy Advisory
Facility (SEAF).
Energy Efficiency
These activitiies also involve technology research, development,
transfer and the commercialisation process. Some examples: Energy
Management and Performance Related Energy Savings Scheme (EMPRESS)
and the GHG Indicator.
Bioenergy
Activities help identify and address
sustainability issues related to Bioenergy production and use (sustainability
principles and criteria, Bioenergy planning, resource assessment),
provide tools to ensure that development benefits of Bioenergy production
and use materialize (market creation and policy interventions, business
development and finance).
Energy Policy
Activities involve the planning and implementation of environmentally-sustainable
energy and transport policies. They are linked to climate change,
particularly mitigation issues. Some examples: SEAF, Climate
Change Policy.
Energy Finance
UNEP Energy has a number of activities with the banking and insurance
community, which are focused on helping financial decision makers
become more aware of investment opportunities in the sustainable
energy sector. Some examples: Export Credit Agencies and
the UNEP Finance Initiatives.
Energy for Sustainable Development
UNEP's activities help developing countries make energy decisions
that support sustainable development in the environmental, social,
and economic dimensions. Some examples: the Global
Network on Energy for Sustainable Development and REED.
Transport
UNEP has established the Mobility Forum, a voluntary initiative
with the automotive industry. The Mobility Forum provides automotive
industry members with a platform to share environmental best practice
experience and to develop new strategies for sustainable mobility.
Activities also help to develop cleaner fuels and improve the environmental
performance of the air transport sector. Some examples: Global
Overlays and Transport Publications.
