Session II: Asia - Energy Subsidies: Rationale and Effectiveness
Why energy subsidies, what initial goals and what are the results of existing systems? This panel session will present an overview of selected national subsidy systems, reasoning behind their existence and the consequences on market penetration of new technologies and the creation of niche markets. Fossil fuel, renewable, direct and indirect subsidy systems will be discussed. Debate should mainly cover the economic, environmental and social reasons for putting these subsidies into place, as well as the extent to which these goals have been achieved.
