An efficient and effective transport system is a key element
for economic growth in both developed and developing countries.
To fulfill this essential role, the transport sector consumes
25 per cent of world's commercial fossil fuel-based energy
and as a consequence, is one of the largest contributors
of both urban and regional air pollution, in addition to
its other known environmental and social ill effects.
Creating solutions to these transport-related impacts requires
an integrated, holistic approach involving various stakeholders
including city planning and local government, decision makers,
transport operators, and consumers, among others.
In an effort to raise awareness on existing sustainable
transport solutions, speakers from cities with proven sustainable
transport solutions will describe experiences and best practices
for:
o increasing energy efficiency using present technology
o reducing dependence on fossil fuel and,
o decreasing GHG gas emissions from the urban transport
sector
In addition, the side event will highlight challenges facing
developing countries with specific attention to the African
continent, in anticipation of the next CSD cycle's focus
on Africa.
