Bioenergy Financing in Africa

UNEP is involved in networks that work to promote small scale bioenergy for development. In regions where traditional financing has been a barrier to bioenergy provision, the organization is committed to sharing best practices and learned lessons on innovative business models that help to overcome these finance barriers.

In October 2009, together with the COMPETE network and ENDA Environmental Development Action in the Third World, UNEP co-organized a conference that brought together investors, financiers, donors, project developers, entrepreneurs, NGOs and international organizations to share experiences and examples of projects that illustrate best practices for bioenergy financing in Africa. The conference sparked a much needed dialogue between various stakeholders to identify specific barriers and practical options to reduce them.

The proceedings and recommendations of the conference deliver these concrete solutions that can promote bioenergy development and financing in Africa, and support a sustainable development agenda.
