THE CLEANER PRODUCTION-ENERGY EFFICIENCY (CP-EE) MANUAL (Guidelines for the Integration of Cleaner Production and Energy Efficiency).........................on an easy-to-navigate CD-ROM, and now available as a downloadable version(zipped file).

From Cleaner Production and Energy Efficiency to integrated CP-EE:

Cleaner Production (CP) and Energy Efficiency (EE) are established and powerful strategies helping enterprises throughout the world to reduce costs and generate profits by reducing waste. Integration of CP and EE provides synergies that broaden the scope of their individual application and give more effective results-both environmental and economic. CP-EE integration is the subject of UNEP DTIE's CP-EE Manual, published as a fully navigable CD-ROM.

What's in the Manual?
The Manual provides a methodology for integration-useful to managers and technical staff alike-coupled with a set of 'tools' that CP-EE practitioners can use directly in the field.

The Manual is in three parts, with 'hyperlinks' allowing users to go straight to the sections most relevant to their needs.

Part-1 lays the foundations for CP-EE integration, introducing its benefits and developing a five-step methodology. Users are then walked through the 18 tasks that make up the steps, helped at each step by a 'Running Example' in the form of completed Worksheets taken from an actual CP-EE assessment. The worksheets are an important tool for CP-EE assessment and the Manual provides fully editable, blank versions that users can print and adapt to their own needs.
Part-2 contains two Technical Modules. The first Module provides background information on energy-using systems that will help in identifying areas of focus for CP-EE assessments and includes further editable Worksheets. The second presents Energy Efficient Technologies.
Part-3 is the Manual's tools and resources section. It includes: Checklists; Thumb Rules; Measuring Instruments; and an extensive list of Information Resources. A fully operational version of UNEP's 'GHG Indicator' is an additional feature of the tools section. Users can access this spreadsheet-based calculator to compute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their facilities.

Who can use the Manual?
Concerns such as reducing waste, saving money or reducing GHG emissions should be shared by everyone in an enterprise. By combining a methodology that encourages involvement of staff at all levels with factual information, technical data and practical tools, the CP-EE Manual fosters everyone's involvement and allows both technical specialists and managers to take effective action.

Features of the CD-ROM format
Hyperlinks are provided throughout the Manual, allowing users to navigate smoothly and easily within the Manual itself and to access tools that are either on the CD-ROM or are Internet based. For example:

  • Hyperlinks on the 'Contents' page and 'Bookmarks' allow users to jump straight to the topics of their choice.
  • Editable, blank worksheets can be opened individually by simply clicking on the corresponding Completed Worksheet in the Manual.
  • UNEP's 'GHG Indicator' can be opened directly from the Contents page or from a link in the Manual.
  • Hyperlinks connect directly to Internet resources.
