Launch of the OzonAction Education Pack


In partnership with national institutions and schools, UNEP, UNESCO and WHO organised the global launch of the Education Pack from ceremonies held on three continents - Africa, Asia and Latin America. The partners also used their own press services to issue a common joint press release through their respective networks. This page presents details from the launching events and ensuing media coverage.

Launching events

Nairobi, Kenya
Mr Eric Falt, Director of UNEP's Division of Communication and Public Information, Mr Paul Horwitz, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat, joined Ms Susan Nkinyozim of UNESCO and Mr Wilfred Ndegwe of WHO to launch the Education Pack at a ceremony in UNEP's Headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya. The Kenya Institute of Education and representatives of the ECO-Schools network participated, as did 13 journalists. School children from the Eco-School Riara Spring Academy performed a song and a poem., and all watched the Ozzy Ozone video.

New Delhi, India
The Minister of State for Environment & Forest, Shri Namo Narain Meena, launched the Education Pack in New Delhi on 15 September 2006 during a special ceremony on the eve of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Dr. B.R.Neupane, Regional Programme Specialist, UNESCO, Mr. Alexander Von Hildbrand, WHO and Mr. Rajendra M. Shende, Head, UNEP DTIE OzonAction Branch, also spoke on the occasion. During the program, a role play of mother and daughter interaction on ozone layer protection was enacted by two children from Delhi Public School, East of Kailash, New Delhi. The children also displayed an interesting model depicting the ozone hole and its impact on life on earth.

Santiago, Chile
Mrs. Lidia Amarales, Under-Secretary of Public Health, Ministry of Health, together with Mr. Rodrigo Guzmán, the Deputy Director of CONAMA, launched the Education Pack in Santiago, Chile on 15 September during a public ceremony that formed part of the country's celebration of the 2006 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The ceremony participants included Mr. Pablo Badenier, Director of CONAMA Metropolitan Region, Mr. Rody Oñate, Information Officer of UNEP's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean,, Dr. Juan Manuel Sotelo, Resident Representative of WHO/PAHO in Chile, Mrs. Catalina Agosin Rosenberg, President of CONAC (National Cancer Corporation), Mrs. Carol Salgado, Secondary Education, Scientific Education and Sustainable Development of UNESCO, and Mr. Manuel Baquedano, President of "Instituto de Ecología Política". Over a hundred girls and boys and teachers from the "Escuela Básica Las Nieves"primary school in San Bernardo participated in this outstanding ceremony, that took place in front of the Contemporary Art Museum (MAC). The children's folkloric group "Los Naranjitos" perfomed.
