Voluntary Initiatives

Voluntary action, sector by sector

Since the 1990s UNEP has been closely involved in the development of international voluntary initiatives on an industry sector basis. Today this work is continued with various sectors. It complements our cross sectoral activities in support of initiatives such as the UN Global Compact and Global Reporting Initiative.

We remain ready to start new initiatives with companies, business organisations, labour and others in multistakeholder partnerships involving new industry sectors.

Joint UNEP/Industry Sector Initiatives

The following initiatives have been created between UNEP and industry whereby companies agree to develop environmentally sound practices along the lines of the Rio principles. Some are well established while others are in the process of being developed:

Industry associations have a key role to play in advancing voluntary action towards sustainability. UNEP suggests that industry associations may wish to share learning experiences. This resulted in a collection of eighteen case histories that introduce associations from over ten different sectors. Every case history gives an overview of activities, goals, contact details and comments from the associations. The text also provides comments from industry association partners such as governments, NGOs and trade unions.
