Learning & Training
UNEP supports training and learning under
the Global Compact through its support in the development
of company case studies, facilitation of learning discussions,
monitoring of company reporting and preparation of training
materials to help companies with implementation.
Global Compact omnibus trainings for managers
on all the ten principles are currently being offered by
experts from the private sector and core agencies. UNEP
has been instrumental in developing these and co-present
training in corporate environmental responsibility. The
1st UNGC Training Workshop for Senior Managers was held
in Turin, Italy from 26-29 November 2007 (see Turin
Managers - PDF - 794 KB). Based on participants
feedback, improvements are being made and workshops in other
countries planned for the future.
UNEP has facilitated workshop discussions on environmental
management and precaution. The related company case studies
can be found on the Global Compact website and are available
in printed form the Global Compact Office. UNEP and the
Global Compact developed the Global
Compact Environmental Principles Training Package
in 2005.
In
2003 UNEP joined WBCSD and other partners in compiling the
Global Compact Performance Model
Source Book which was launched at the Global Compact
Leaders Summit on 24 June 2004, entitled "Raising the
Bar". The book presents summaries of various tools
companies can use for implementation of the Global Compact
principles. The performance model is based on total quality
management (TQM). Raising the Bar includes various tools
associated with UNEP, including the CP Delaration, APPEL,
EMS Training Kit, The Entrepreneur Kit for SME's and the
GRI Guidelines for sustainability reporting.
UNEP and ILO have led the development
of the Global Compact Resource Package,
an introductory CD-Rom package for companies, associations
and management schools. The interactive CD-ROM covers three
main areas of the Compact human rights, labour, and
the environment and includes slide presentations
and case studies. Copies of the CD-ROM can be ordered from
the Global Compact Office.
In 2005 UNEP published, as follow-up to
the Resource Package, a training kit on the environmental
principles of the Global Compact.
Communication on Progress
At the cross sectoral level, we see the
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines as a key tool
to assist in learning about progress made by companies involved
in the Global Compact. The GRI Sustainability Reporting
Guidelines on Economic, Environmental and Social Performance
provides the basis for benchmarking, rating and identifying
best practices.
As of January 2003 companies are expected
to indicate annually in their publications (for example
annual financial reports and/or sustainability reports)
how they are implementing the principles of the Global Compact.
In doing these annual "Communications on Progress"
(COP), companies are encouraged to use indicators such as
those included in the GRI Guidelines. This approach is aimed
at supporting the learning value and integrity of the initiative.
See the Guidance Note and Pocket Guide
on COPs as well as a Table listing the Global Compact principles
with key related GRI reporting indicators.
