The Brazilian Roundtable identified energy, water, forestry
and natural resources, and waste management as the SCP priorities
for Brazil. The Brazilian Ministry of Environment, the European
Commission, Mercosur, UNEP, GTZ and a great number of industry
representatives discussed also some of the most effective
policies to promote SCP. Moreover, the Roundtable recognised
key areas to continue working on and strengthen:
- Communication and education on SCP
- Sustainable Public Procurement
- Environmental certification
- Economic instruments.

Opening session of the Brazilian
Roundtable
The Brazilian Roundtable was successful in introducing
and promoting the Marrakech Process and guidelines. The
roundtable presented also the opportunity to exchange experiences
and best practices between Brazil and the European Countries.
Mr. Thierry Dudermel from the European Commission highlighted
the importance of working at both the demand and supply
side and said that SCP should not be seen as a policy against
development but rather as a new opportunity for markets
and society. Finland and the United Kingdom shared their
national experience of developing SCP strategy. Mercosur
announced that its Sub-Group on Environment (SGT6) has just
designed its SCP strategy that is to be jointly developed
by Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Venezuela.
