The Methyl Bromide
Alternatives Discussion Forum & RUMBA Update Service
Methyl Bromide is an ozone depleting crop fumigant controlled under
the Montreal Protocol. Our discussion forum enables members to exchange
knowledge about issues related to the methyl bromide phase out. RUMBA
is a monthly electronic news service of the OzonAction Programme that
assists developing countries with reducing and eliminating their use
of methyl bromide.

Industry Outreach
DTIE's Industry Outreach activities seek to promote responsible
entrepreneurship among various stakeholders - industry, business, governments,
and NGOs. Focus areas include voluntary initiatives, environmental reporting,

Voluntary Initiativesis a focus area of DTIE's Industry Outreach, promoting
the use of voluntary initiatives as a policy tool to improve environmental
performance and help achieve sustainability.

Global Reporting Initiative
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international, multi-stakeholder
effort to create a common framework for voluntary reporting of the economic,
environmental, and social impact of organisation-level activity.
UN's Global Compact
UN Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan's challenge to world business leaders
to "embrace and enact" a set of 9 principles that cover topics in human
rights, labour and environment in their individual corporate practices.
DTIE contributes the environmental portion of this site, which is
maintained by the United Nations Global Compact Network.

Chemicals Branch
The Chemicals Branch works towards making the world a safer place from
toxic chemicals by helping governments take needed global actions for
the sound management of chemicals, by promoting the exchange of information
on chemicals, and by helping to build the capacities of countries around
the world to use chemicals safely.
Persistant Organic
Pollutants
POPs are chemicals that persist, bioaccumulate in plants and animals,
are transported long distances in the environment, and are toxic to
people. The Chemicals Branch work on POPs facilitates the negotiations
of a legally binding international instrument on POPs and promotes the
early reduction and elimination of releases of POPs into the environment
through information exchange and capacity building programmes.
Prior Informed Consent (PICs)
The interim secretariat for the Rotterdam Convention, jointly with the
FAO. The Rotterdam Convention, based on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure,
prevents export of harmful pesticides and industrial chemicals, unless
the importing country agrees to accept them. The PICs program promotes
understanding and training in the Convention's implementation.
Pollutant Release
and Transfer Register
A clearinghouse of systems developed by several national and regional
government organisations to collect and disseminate data on environmental
releases and transfers of toxic chemicals from industrial facilities.
GINC - Global Information
Network on Chemicals
A world wide information network for safe use of chemicals. This network
showcases useful information sources provided by both international
organizations and national institutions collaborating for safe control
of chemicals.
OzonAction
Supports the phase out of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) in developing
countries under the Montreal Protocol through its information clearinghouse
and capacity-building services.
Mineral Resources
Forum - Environment
Internet framework for international co-ordination on the theme of minerals,
metals and sustainable development, promoting the exchange of knowledge,
experience and expertise in the impact of mining, mineral processing
and metals on the natural environment; the mitigation of environmental
damage; and planning for mine closure and disposal of hazardous wastes.

Cleaner Production is the continuous application of an integrated
preventive environmental strategy applied to processes, products, and
services to increase overall efficiency and reduce risks to humans and
the environment. DTIE's Cleaner Production activities promote strategies,
policies and practices to prevent pollution from processes, products
and services.

Declaration on Cleaner Production
A voluntary but public statement of commitment to the strategy and
practice of cleaner production (CP).
Promoting Cleaner Production
Investment
Promoting investment in sustainable businesses and CP in developing
countries, this project aims at demonstrating financial institutions
the financial and environmental benefits inherent in CP investments
as well as helping entrepreneurs and CP experts develop creditworthy
CP investment proposals.

The
IETC - The International Environmental Technology Centre
One of the priority areas in the IETC Urban Activities Programme is
sustainable building and construction whereby a platform and related
work programme has been created to promote sustainable principles, methods,
tools and technologies for buildings and infrastructure.

UNEP has brought together key stakeholders in the building and construction
arena to create a forum for information exchange on current initiatives
and to form modalities of co-operation between partners that will bring
the necessary synergies and actions to promote sustainable construction,
